Chapter 8
Knoxâs POV
Staring at the ray of sunlight moving across the ceiling, I groaned. I couldnât believe Iâd almost told Sage why Blaze and I werenât friends.
Stupid.
She didnât need to know about Stephanie and certainly didnât need to know why we fought that night. Rubbing a shaking hand across my face, I breathed in the stale air and winced. I glanced at the window Iâd forgotten to crack.
The dull beep of an alarm rang in the next room. The sound muffled by the wall and followed a loud thump before the alarm cut off. Maxâs morning routine always woke me up but Iâd been lying awake for who knows how long. Sighing, I forced myself out of bed. No one mentioned running an animal clinic in the middle of nowhere would lead to working weekends.
Max and Slade would be at the bar most of the day and the idea of leaving Sage alone bothered me. It was obvious she wouldnât ask for help until the last minute. Realistically, I knew they were teaming up to cycle with her. That much was evident from the small taste of majick Iâd sampled last night.
Max thought I was stuck in the past, too scared to open myself up again. It wasnât just that, it was the fact that despite sharing the same name, Sage looked and acted nothing like the girl we knew. Even now after cycling, her frequency was off. Call me skeptical, but I wasnât about to jump feet first into a relationship with someone that possibly wasnât ours.
How would I live with myself if she wasnât?
Sage was awake, sitting on the couch with a steaming mug when I walked out. Biting the bullet, I invited her with me for the day. Someone had to make sure she was okay.
On the drive, sheâd been quiet staring out the window lost in thought. Keeping an ear on her, I waited for a clue to what was going through her head. Not wanting to make the wrong assumption based on the events of the past month. It was crazy how she pushed the majick down, even after Max and Slade had cycled with her.
She was still struggling with the loss of her parents, especially after what happened to her mom. While my parents had passed long ago and left Stephanie in my care, the pain from the accident remained. Stephanie and our parents had gone so suddenly, I couldnât imagine what it was like to watch them slowly fade away.
Shaking my head, I eased the Jeep to an empty spot outside the clinic. The loss of movement startled Sage from her thoughts. She glanced around in a daze before sliding out of the vehicle. Catching sight of the sign, her eyes widened before narrowing on me. Scratching the back of my neck, I pushed into the small building with a quick hello to my receptionist Jenna before leading Sage back to my office. As soon as the door closed, she spun with crossed arms.
